If you get a pest problem in your home it can quickly become overwhelming, particularly if you try to deal with it yourself. That’s why it’s a good idea to hire a professional to come and get rid of those nasty animals or bugs that are bothering you and destroying your property. Sure, sometimes do-it-yourself methods can work on minor issues, but any infestation typically requires the use of a professional pest control service.
Before we move on to the next section of this post, let’s talk a bit about pests. What are pests, anyway? The dictionary states that a pest is a destructive insect or other animal that attacks crops, livestock, food, or interferes with any other human activity. Some examples would include insects like cockroaches, ants, termites, and bed bugs; rodents like squirrels, rats, and mice; and even larger animals like raccoons.
So what makes these pests so bad, and why would you want a pro to get rid of them?
1. Major Damage
Termites cause over $5 billion of damage to property in the U.S., and southern parts of Canada also have termite problems. In Southern Ontario alone there are more than 30 localized areas with subterranean termites known. Termites eat away at the cellulose in wood and wood products, leaving hollow spots. This can cause structural weakness if left unchecked.
Other insects that can cause damage are carpenter ants. These don’t eat the wood, but chew holes into it to make spaces for their nests.
Rats, mice, and squirrels cause damage when they chew on attic wiring and contaminate insulation with their feces and urine. As an added bonus, squirrels do all that plus they can chew holes in your siding and soffits. Any of these rodents are also a major fire hazard; rats, mice, and squirrels are responsible for up to 25% of all “mystery” fires.
In addition to the damage rats and mice cause to your home, they are also very unhealthy houseguests. One little mouse leaves around 3,000 microdroplets of urine in your home each day. This goes wherever the mouse travels in his journeys around your home: on your counters, in with your dishes, in your food cupboards, and more. These microdroplets carry different viruses and bacteria and can make you sick. Their larger cousins, the rat, leave urine and faces that can spread murine typhus, salmonella, and other disease. The plague was spread by rats. Enough said!
German cockroaches aren’t just gross-looking, but they’re also very unhealthy. Kids who grow up in homes with these bugs are more likely to have asthma and allergies. Their shed skins and feces carry pathogens and are allergenic.
Bedbugs, while not carrying pathogens, are very undesirable. Their bites are irritating and scratching at bedbug sores can cause secondary bacterial infections. Bedbug infestations can also make sleeping a very uncomfortable task.
Not many people like to share their homes with bugs and rodents, so overall, pests are a most unwanted houseguest. There aren’t many people who want to live with rats running across the room, or termites that could literally cause your home to come crashing around your head, or carpets that are jumping with fleas, so before it gets that bad, a pro can help.
4. Find the Source
Experts will be able to find the source of the problem much faster than a layperson. They know where to look and how to eliminate them permanently by attacking the source of the infestation.
Many DIY solutions are only a “maybe” solution at best. A pro will often offer guaranteed results on their work so if the pests come back within the guarantee period, they’ll come back and re-treat the home without any further charges.
