5 Best Lyft and Uber Alternatives in Cities

Getting around Toronto and the surrounding area is not easy. Especially now that there seems to be a new condo sprouting from the ground every few months. More condos mean more people which means, of course, more cars. Unfortunately, this means there is not enough parking in the downtown area for everyone. If there is a game on, the price of even a few hours parking is almost extortionate.

This is why ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft are becoming so popular. Although after using them for some time, some consumers find that they would prefer an alternative. If you want to make sure that you are getting the best possible deal on your transportation throughout the city, read on!

We have put together a list with some of the best Lyft and Uber alternatives:

1. Turo

You asked for Lyft and Uber alternatives, and Turo is one of the best solutions. This is a car-sharing app that allows you to drive cars of people who are effectively renting them out to you through the app. What is great about this app is that you are able to choose from a wide range of cars. Some of them are very high end. This can be a great way to get around the city in style. For Turo, you do need to replace the gas that you use as you drive around.

This is a very easy to use service, the only drawback is that you often need to pick up the car yourself from the location provided. Some car owners will deliver the car to you, but this is becoming rarer. Another reason that we’re not thrilled with this service is that each of your requests needs to be approved by the owner of the car. This can take hours before you know if you have a car or not so you do need to plan in advance.

2. Limousines

This alternative option may seem like a little too fancy for what you would need day to day. However, many are surprised just how affordable renting a limousine can be. You will have all of the luxuries you would expect from such a vehicle and a professional driver.

Unlike the part-time drivers you get at Uber and Lyft, you will not have to be concerned about their driving ability. This is their career and main source of income. You will be treated with respect. Another advantage of limousines is that they are very spacious. You will be able to get yourself and a large group of your friends or family along for the ride.

If you are thinking about booking some form of transportation through Toronto and the surrounding areas for a large group, you should definitely look into this option.

3. Black car services

These are similar to limousine services but they are a little more subtle. A luxury car will pick you up from wherever you are and deliver you to your destination in style. These are a little easier to navigate through traffic than limousines, and they still have the convenience of a hired driver. You will be able to arrive at your next meeting or event in the comfort of one of these cars with no stress whatsoever.

This can be a great way to get to and from a wedding just outside of town. If you were planning on staying in a hotel, you might find that a black car service is much cheaper. There is the added bonus of being able to stay in your own bed too!

4. Enterprise CarShare

Throughout the city, there is a great deal of pick up locations for Enterprise’s car share program. You can find the car that you are looking for through there app. In no time at all, you could be driving anything from a sedan to a large van.

The only drawback is that you will need to return the car to where you picked it up from. This can be a little annoying and not nearly as convenient as the door to door service that you would get from a limousine or black car service.

5. Kanga Ride

This service is great if you are planning to leave the city. Rather than rent a car and drive it as far as Ottawa you will be able to hop in the car with someone who’s already going that way. Sounds a lot like hitchhiking? Well, it is in a way, only you have the security of knowing that the person has been verified against their credit card information. This can be a great way to save money on long drives. You will also have the added, albeit dubious, benefit of meeting new people.

The downside of Kanga is that you are once again putting yourself in the care of someone who is not a professional driver. This is often fine, but you will occasionally come across someone who should really not be on the road.
