The 4 Most Common Plumbing Problems

When do you have to call a plumber? If you have a home, at some point, you are going to need a plumber. With maintenance, you can take care or prevent some problems but sometimes, it may be too big of a job. You may be able to fix a couple of small leaks here and there, but sometimes, you will need a professional to do the job and to do it right, or it is going to cause you more damage and a lot more money if you make a mistake.

Let’s take a look at some of the more common plumbing problems and know when you have to call for help.

1. Issues With Pipes

It is really important to do maintenance work on your plumbing, so make sure that you have certain tools to handle some of the problems, or at least to prevent it. This is one of the best ways to prevent costly repairs. The problem with pipes is that it can slowly creep up on you and you’ll never know.

A proper inspection with a plumber is the only way you can catch something before it becomes a larger issue. Things such as hidden leaks in your sink drain or perhaps under a water heater can eventually cause structural damage. Seeping water can cause mold to grow. Wood floors can get damaged. Maintenance will prevent such disasters.

2. Leaky Faucet

This is not only common but it can also be downright annoying, especially when it is really quiet and you can hear it as it gnaws away at you! Apart from being irritating, it can also increase your water bill if you do nothing about it. A leak like this happens when a washer becomes worn, torn or even dislodged.

A simple leak such as this can be handled by yourself, however, if it has been going on for a while, the valve seat may have corroded and you may need to call a plumber.

3. Inadequate Water Pressure

If you notice that your normally good water pressure has somewhat diminished, you may have a low water pressure problem. There is a chance that the problem exists somewhere else and not with you. There may be a problem with pipes in your municipality, but this is also quite rare. It may be that there is a deposit build-up on faucet aerators. Take them off and soak them in vinegar overnight and this should help clear the deposits.

If the low pressure problem is still there, then it is wise to call a licensed plumber to find out what the problem is.

4. Running Toilet

Ever had to jiggle your flush handle after flushing because the toilet kept on going? It could be because of the flapper valve, an imbalance of the float or a loose fill tube. If it is any of these, you can try to fix it yourself with a repair kit. If the problem has not resolved, it may be a more complex issue.

Try to prevent drains from clogging, another common problem. Once a month, pour a liquid drain cleaner to keep pipes running efficiently. You can also use baking soda and vinegar. When it comes to jobs like water heaters, installation of new pipes, certain constructions that will require proper permits, leaks in septic tanks or sewer line breaks, these are jobs for which you need to call a professional and licensed plumber.
